With songs of shipwreck, pirating on the high seas, whaling and wayward sailors, Three sheets to the Wind seeks to preserve nautical songs and chanteys that have been sung on board for hundreds of years. The chanteyman had an important job aboard ship. His songs and their rhythms not only helped coordinate the job and make the work easier, but kept the crew singing and on its toes. It also excused him from much of the tedious work like pushing the capstan, hauling on the halyard and pumping out the bilge. Three Sheets has performed at major events, including the Sausalito Centenial, the 150th birthday bash for Bodega Bay, the Oregon Coast Maritime Festival, Dana Point Tallship Festival, Morro Bay Harbor Festival and Live Oak Festival. They have played live on radio station KOTR's "Local Kincks" show. They have performed on the California Tallship Californian and on the Hawaiian Chieftan, a replica of a 1790's vessel. They are also a favorite at local elementary schools. The group also conceived Bayfest, an annual folk and sea music festival held in Baywood park. The band includes Sidney Wilson Young (guitar, banjo and vocals), Captain Tony Sciola (accordian, guitar, percussion, vocals and recorder), and Jack Beardwood (vocals and percussion). Sid and Jack grew up in the same sleepy Southern California beach town. Sid has been studying folk music since she was a young girl. She started playing guitar at the age of 12 and picked up the banjo eight years later. She started training her voice in a church choir and currently sings with the St. Peter's Choir in Morro Bay. She is a songwriter and a member of the Songwriter's Guild (formerly AGAC). For the last five years she has studied classical voice inthe studio of Mary Sue Gee of Los Osos. Jack has been singing all his life. He has been in and out of church, school and boys club choirs since he was six years old. When not singing with Three Sheets to the Wind or practicing his cutthroat pirate routine, Jack is a freelance journalist. You might also catch him out in the waves with his boogie board at "A" Beach in Morro Bay. As a child Captain Tony was forced to learn polkas on the accordion, a skill for which he is now grateful. Tony has spent much of his adult life on boats, including a stint in the Navy and living the good life off the coast of Mexico. He is a font of nautical lore and practical wisdom and was the group's chief researcher. Today, singer/songwriter Chisanne Wollett rounds out the crew on vocals, harmonica, mandolin and guitar. Born in St. Louis, she has spent most of her life right here in Cali-for-ni-a. Previously partnering with Sidney in another group, "The Belles", she has has been aboard "Three Sheets to the Wind" for the past ten years.
